'The Black Stuff'
A Musical about Rubber! A quirky musical about a scientific discovery that made rubber ducks, cars, global communication, and even space travel possible!
Based on true events: In a race against his rivals and battling incredible odds, Charles Goodyear turned natural rubber into a useful product that revolutionised industries around the world. But it took everything he had, and his children's lives hung in the balance. Meanwhile, his wife Clarissa faced the age-old struggle of women everywhere in this patriarchal society - the fight to have her voice heard. Balancing cheeky humour and dark storytelling, “The Black Stuff” is the tale of a bankrupt button-maker who became one of the most important inventors of all time – and the terrible cost of his obsessive ambition. "Wonderful...I didn't expect it to be quite so comical and enjoyable" Rony Robinson, BBC Radio Sheffield |

REVIEWS & QUOTES
☆☆☆☆
"Morrell's score and lyrics are bright, breezy, and a bit off-centre to keep things entertaining throughout...The cheeky and brash approach is hugely appealing and highly informative...Thought-provoking and entertaining" Manchester Theatre Awards "A fun and enthralling musical tale... We must applaud the amazing work of Holl Morrell who crafted the book and script for the production, and what a book it was. A fine collection of insanely catchy songs from ballads to rap... incredible vocals... This original musical has so much potential and is already showing why people should sit down and listen" MCR Review "Musically very strong with a soaring and contemporary musical theatre score" Number Nine Reviews "It's a big story to tell... however, Kearney's direction and Morrell's writing are certainly up to the challenge. Both the music and lyrics are accomplished, professional, and highly enjoyable. Not only are the songs very catchy, but Morrell shows a real talent for revealing character development musically... Stylish and infectious...Sassy and charismatic...an accomplished and highly enjoyable debut." Hannah Kate, SheWolf "In terms of narrative, it is as easy to follow as it is entertaining and educational. This is helped by the songs used to keep it flowing. The catchy lyrics and melodies help the characters emotions jump off the page. However, they do not detract the audience the drama of the piece, adding to the perfect balance of grit and comedy."
